Why Fender Flares Change Your Mud Flap Requirements
Stock mud flaps are designed for a wheel opening’s factory edge. When you bolt on flares, you’re extending that edge outward and downward — sometimes by two or three inches — and creating a new mounting surface that sits lower than the original hardware locations.
Most universal mud flaps assume the factory rocker-panel contour, so they either hang too far inboard once flares are installed or their top edge collides with the flare’s lower lip. Truck-specific kits solve part of the problem by matching your make and model, but they still need enough vertical clearance to work with the flare profile you chose.
The result: you’ll either need flaps built to mount directly to common flare styles or a universal design short enough to sit below the flare’s trailing edge without overlap. Material stiffness matters too — rigid ABS panels tend to crack when forced to conform to a contour they weren’t shaped for, while heavier rubber or thermoplastic blends flex enough to tolerate small fitment mismatches.

Pocket-Style Flares
Our pocket flares sit proud of the fender with a distinct raised lip. That lip creates a natural shelf where mud flaps can tuck underneath, as long as the flap’s upper mounting bracket doesn’t extend above the pocket’s bottom edge.
Look for designs that mount via existing frame holes or through-bolts that sit inboard of the flare itself. The Bushwacker mud flaps we offer are drilled to match those inboard points, so the flap hangs cleanly behind the pocket without forcing you to drill new holes through the flare body.
Extend-A-Fender & Flat Styles
Extend-a-fender and flat-profile flares sit tighter to the body panel, leaving less vertical clearance between the flare’s lower edge and the rocker. Universal flaps that worked on a stock truck may now sit too high, covering the flare’s bottom trim or blocking access to the mounting screws you’ll need later for service.
In these cases, look for shorter universal designs — typically marketed as ‘low-profile’ — or order a set custom-cut to end one inch above your rocker. Some installers prefer to mount the flaps first, then install flares over them, but that sequence makes it harder to adjust flare alignment and can trap dirt between the two layers.
Material Trade-Offs: Rubber vs Thermoplastic vs ABS
Rubber flaps are the most forgiving when it comes to irregular mounting surfaces. They flex around contour changes and absorb impacts without cracking, but they also sag over time and can curl upward at highway speeds if the mounting tabs aren’t reinforced.
Thermoplastic blends — often branded as TPO or TPE — split the difference: stiffer than rubber so they hold shape better, but still flexible enough to tolerate a few degrees of misalignment when you’re lining up holes that don’t perfectly match the flare profile. We use thermoplastic for most of our own pocket-style fender flares because it resists UV fade and stays pliable across a wider temperature range than pure rubber.
ABS panels deliver the cleanest look — no sag, crisp edges — but they demand exact fitment. If your flare’s contour doesn’t match the flap’s molded curve within a quarter inch, the ABS will either leave a gap that lets mud through or crack at the mounting boss when you torque the hardware. Save rigid plastic flaps for applications where you know the manufacturer has test-fit that exact flare-and-flap combination on your truck year and trim.

Drilling vs No-Drill Installation & Long-Term Durability
No-drill kits sound appealing, but they rely on adhesive clips or push-pin mounts that slide into existing panel seams. Once you’ve installed flares, many of those factory seams are covered or offset, leaving the clips with nothing to grab.
Drilling through the flare itself is an option, but it voids most flare warranties and creates a permanent water-ingress point unless you seal every hole with a grommet and thread-locker. A better approach: mount the flaps to the frame or rocker using through-bolts that pass inboard of the flare, then use short self-tapping screws only at the flap’s trailing edge where flex is minimal and a small hole won’t compromise the flare’s structural ribs.
According to the vehicle fender standards documented by SAE and similar organizations, any accessory mounted to a fender or flare must not interfere with the wheel’s full suspension travel or create a sharp edge that could snag debris and pull the assembly loose. Plan for at least a half-inch clearance between the flap’s inner edge and the tire’s maximum turn radius, measured at full compression.
Long-term, the flaps will loosen as the truck flexes over rough terrain. Check your hardware every oil change and re-torque any bolts that have backed out — especially the ones near the flare’s mounting tabs, which see the most vibration.
Getting the Fit Right the First Time
Pairing mud flaps with fender flares comes down to three decisions: match the flap’s profile to your flare style, choose a material flexible enough to tolerate small alignment gaps, and plan your mounting strategy before you drill. Stock hardware rarely lines up perfectly once flares are installed, so expect to add at least a couple of new fasteners per corner.

If you’re starting from scratch, measure twice and mock-fit everything before you commit — a test-fit with painter’s tape and a few clamps will show you exactly where clearance issues will crop up and save you from having to re-drill later.

On some trucks, yes — if the flare’s mounting hardware includes through-bolts that also serve as flap attachment points. Pocket-style flares often leave enough of the factory rocker exposed that you can reuse existing holes or add flaps via the flare’s own lower fasteners.
Flat and extend-a-fender styles sit closer to the body, so you’ll usually need at least two or three new holes per flap to avoid relying entirely on the flare’s mounting tabs.
Use flaps with reinforced mounting tabs and avoid designs that rely on a single top bracket. Hardware should include at least one mid-point fastener and a lower anchor near the trailing edge to resist wind lift.

If you see heavy winter use, prioritize TPO or TPE flaps with UV stabilizers and avoid anything marketed as ‘lightweight’ or ‘show quality,’ which usually means thinner material that won’t survive a full season of plowing through slush.
